In the 3rd round of this Eredivisie season FC Utrecht sustained the first damage of the year. Despite a territorial supremacy and an abundance of opportunities the players from Utrecht lost 2-1 against FC Groningen in the Noordlease Stadium.
When the teacher used to say: if 5 equals 2, then 30 equals? The answer should have been 12. In this case FC Groningen fired 5 shots and scored twice, whereas FC Utrecht had 30 attempts on goal………and scored only once.
Last obstacle too high
It so happened that in Groningen, where the 525 Utrecht supporters who had travelled to the match determined the ambience for ninety minutes, the home team walked off the pitch winners. Whereas the visitors made the running, were in control and even dominated the game. But that final Groningen obstacle, Sergio Padt, appeared to be too high an obstacle in 29 of the 30 cases.
Bahebeck scores during his Eredivisie debut
Any exception to the rule? Jean-Christophe Bahebeck. After more than 60 minutes and with a bit of luck he got ball possession in the box. The striker, who made his first appearance in the , Eredivisie headed the right way and skilfully slotted the ball in: one goal pulled back. The score was 2-0 and was now 2-1.
Damage
But it was not enough to repair the damage sustained in the first half. Already after eight minutes FC Utrecht had a goal against when Django Warmerdam whacked in 1-0 in the corner. Five minutes before half time the players from Utrecht had to accept another goal against; Kasper Larsen managed to score 2-0.
Corners: FC Utrecht 13, FC Groningen 0
After the 2-1 by Bahebeck FC Utrecht did not cease to knock on the Groningen gate. They tried from the left, and from the right. By shooting, and heading; the whole scenario was used. FC Utrecht had 13 corners, FC Groningen 0. But also the corners did not come through.
