FC Utrecht lost 3-0 to PSV this evening (Sunday). Utrecht could not prevent the Eindhoveners scoring three times in the second half.
The 2016/2017 edition of the match PSV - FC Utrecht, will be remembered for the 0-1. Or the goal that Utrecht should have been awarded. It was a beautiful running attack by Utrecht. As supple as a ballerina and as deadly as a sniper. The attack had everything, including the ball in the net.
No cheering
But Utrecht did not cheer. The assistant referee raised his flag, referee Dennis Higler blew his whistle. The goal was disallowed for offside. But it wasn’t! And the lead went up in smoke.
A strong first half
The goal would have been deserved, too, given the run of play. Utrecht were weakened by a suspension, several injuries and a flu virus but the team from Dom City had an excellent first half in the Philips Stadium and PSV barely touched the ball.
PSV pull ahead
In just three minutes after the half-time break, however, the reigning Eredivisie champions pulled ahead. Luuk de Jong first headed in a corner at the far post (1-0). Two minutes later Steven Bergwijn rifled the ball into the net: 2-0. Utrecht didn’t give up hope but they were unable to pull one back in Eindhoven. Worse was to come, deep into injury time Marco van Ginkel added his name to the scoresheet: 3-0.
Venema’s Eredivisie debut
Shortly before, Nick Venema scored a personal goal. The 17-year-old striker from Austerlitz played his first minutes in the Eredivisie. A product of the FC Utrecht Academy, he came on for Richairo Zivkovic shortly before time, only days after making his debut in the starting line-up for Young Utrecht in the Jupiler League.
