FC Utrecht have no answer to FC Groningen

Home team fall below the minimum standard in the match against FC Groningen.

FC Groningen beat FC Utrecht convincingly in the home game. Trainer/coach Ten Hag’s team was never even close to a win in Stadium Galgenwaard. The final score, 1-5, was in the words of Ten Hag himself not even flatterered.

One moment the tide appeared to be turning. FC Utrecht fought mostly against themselves instead of against FC Groningen, but when Nacer Barazite substituted Patrick Joosten there was a glimmer of hope for FC Utrecht. Richairo Zivkovic was the one to make use of that hope. With a good outplayed chance, set up by Sofyan Amrabat he beat goalkeeper Sergio Padt. The tying goal was there.

Cut and turn
At that time FC Utrecht were 2-0 down. The first setback was in the 14th minute. Cut, turn, move away, cut again and then shoot. Before he knew it, the ball was behind Robbin Ruiter and the goal scorer’s name was Oussama Idrissi. And that happened right at the moment FC Utrecht had just found a way to deal with the FC Groningen pressure. After that goal, FC Utrecht was completely off the map.

Into the crossing
That would not be the only goal Idrissi scored that evening. Right before half time he showed that whenever he shot, it was a hit, He curled the ball into the crossing and gave FC Utrecht another blow. It was 0-2 at half time and referee Dennis Higler sent both teams towards the dressing room, where Erik Ten Hag had to recharge his team for the second half.

Outplayed
After the tying goal from Zivkovic the engine blocked. Every chance Groningen got became a goal. The score increased. 1-3, by Danny Hoesen of all people, then 1-4 and in the dying seconds of the game the final blow. Hoesen scored his second goal of the evening and on Twitter people said: when he scores, something is wrong.

Busy week
The 1-5 loss against FC Groningen needs to be dealt with soon, because a busy week lies ahead of FC Utrecht. Thursday the team travel toward FC Twente to start a new KNVB Cup adventure. Sunday is the home game against Sparta Rotterdam. That promises to be a well attended game, because season ticket holders can bring a friend along.
