Combative FC Utrecht defeated

Dom City players defeated on their own pitch against Ajax: 1-3.

This afternoon (Sunday) FC Utrecht were defeated by Ajax. In the final league match of the year 2018 the Amsterdammers were too strong for the Dom City players 1-3, who refused to buckle until far in extra time.

The pass came from Nieuwegeiner Sean Klaiber, the header from Nick Venema from Austerlitz. The get-together between the players from the province of Utrecht, knocked into shape by the FC from Dom City for that matter, resulted in 1-2. A tying goal. A goal – cleverly scored by Venema, with a header - that ignited hope again and gave the starting signal for both an exciting and a hectic final phase.

Advocaat plays his strong cards
In the last fifteen minutes of the match FC Utrecht were explicitly on the hunt for the equaliser. Head coach Dick Advocaat put his two strong offensive cards Sander van de Streek and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck on the table and was hoping to at least sharing the points in this afternoon’s sold-out Stadium Galgenwaard: a draw was certainly one of the options. You could feel it, it was hanging in the air.

Sharp counter crushed hope for Utrecht
But in the final phase the ball just did not end in the right place for the Utrechters. Bahabeck was closest to scoring the equaliser. The eager substitute forced goalkeeper Andre Onana to a maximum effort to block the shot, and that is what the international from Cameroon did. In the extra time of the match Ajax played the counter well under the Utrecht pressure and that resulted in the decisive goal.  After a Hakim Ziyech rush it was Frenkie de Jong who made it 1-3. Referee Dennis Higler decided to see the video images when there was doubt about Kasper Dolberg’s alleged obstruction, but decided that the action of the Dane, who blocked Joris van Overeem, was not a foul.

Tadic scores from a penalty
An earlier VAR situation resulted in a reviewed decision. After having seen the video images of a get-together between Willen Janssen and Dolberg extensively, Higler decided to put the ball on the penalty spot and to show the captain of the Utrechters a yellow card. From eleven metres, in the sixtieth minute of the match, Dusan Tadic doubled the margin: 0-2.

Dolberg accurate
After some fifteen minutes Ajax took the lead in Stadium Galgenwaard. The Dane stood at the end of a quick Amsterdam counter attack and cold-bloodedly defeated his fellow countryman David Jensen (0-1). In the first half FC Utrecht were hardly able to enforce any offensive actions, though the Dom City players had a great opportunity from a tight Oussame Tannane free-kick. But the attempt only resulted in a corner.

Winter break
For FC Utrecht the winter break has started. Head coach Advocaat’s team will resume league football again on Saturday 19 January in the AFAS Stadium. On that day AZ are the Dom City players’ opponent. FC Utrecht will be playing in Stadium Galgenwaard again on Sunday 27 January, when Willem II will be visiting.
